This is what I have observed with Minecraft liquid mechanics and this is also the best method I can think of for obsidian mining. Why would you need a lot of obsidian? Well, obsidian is the perfect currency for vanilla servers. It basically turns 15 seconds into 1 block, just how employment turns hours into money. See the logic there?
